Bristol Information
Once the second city of England, Bristol made its name from the flourishing sea trade in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries when ships set sail from the bustling port to discover new lands and bring back exotic gifts. Today the south-west’s key city is most famous for its academia, culture and as one of the best cities for a night out in the UK. The picturesque city is perhaps most famous the architecturally stunning Clifton and Severn Bridges which allow you to leave the bustle for the countryside, however the city has just as much to offer clients and visitors.
Thanks to Banksy, Aardman Animations and Only Fools and Horses, Bristol’s reputation as a creative and artistic city has flourished in the last 30 years. Banksy has put on art shows throughout the city whilst Aardman Animations has produced feature length episodes and films such as Wallace and Gromit as well as Chicken Run. Only Fools and Horses often used the city for outdoor shots, the most famous being the external view of Nelson Mandela House where the Trotter family lived.
Bristol has a thriving night life, thanks in part to its ability to attract students to the Russell Group recognised Bristol University and partly because of the city’s regenerated harbour area. Alongside clubs and traditional pubs, the city centre and harbour offers a wide selection of brand name shops, waterfront bars and business community areas which entice some of the biggest names in industry to do business in the city.
Unlike many port cities throughout the world, Bristol has not had great success with its sporting teams. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club was home to WG Grace but the club have never won the county title, whilst the two football clubs have had the ignominy of playing in the fourth division, the lowest professional tier of English football. Bristol City are the most famous of the two Bristolian football teams having reached the FA Cup final and played top flight football. Bristol Rovers meanwhile have moved grounds regularly and even played in Bath for a short time, such has been the antipathy towards them locally.
