Liverpool Information

Liverpool is synonymous with culture and trend setting, thanks to its prowess in music and football. For every person who pays homage to The Beatles and the Cavern Club, there will be another visitor to the city who heads to Anfield or Goodison Park to watch Liverpool or Everton. Other cultural interests in the Merseyside city include the regenerated Albert Dock area and its museums as well as the famous Liver Building.

Awarded the prestigious European City of Culture title in 2008, Liverpool has worked hard to re-brand its 1980′s image which suffered from the Toxteth Riots and was immortalised in Alan Bleasedale’s drama series ‘Boys from the Black Stuff’. Since then, regeneration has been combined with the preservation of historical sites. The two Liverpool cathedrals mesh with some world class shopping outlets and stylish restaurants and bars. The imposing Liver Building watches over the city whilst Albert Dock – once the gateway to the sea-faring world – has been reinvented as a UNESCO heritage and culture site.

The city has a host of museums including the Tate, the Slavery Museum and the Merseyside Maritime Museum, whilst historical interest comes from the stunning Protestant Liverpool Cathedral. Visitors looking for a more up to date event can either attend Creamfields Festival, the Matthew Street Festival or the horse racing Grand National at Aintree. Besides the famous annual horse race, Merseyside’s other sporting passion is football, with the two football clubs Liverpool and Everton having won every English major trophy and every European trophy between them. The proximity of both clubs is such that Liverpool’s Anfield and Everton’s Goodison Park are separated only by Stanley Park.

No visit to Liverpool could be completed without admiring the city’s musical heritage. Liverpool is home to the the most number one singles in the British charts, with the majority of them being attributed to either The Beatles or songs written by Lennon or McCartney. The Beatles tours are immensely popular and include destinations such as Strawberry Field, Penny Lane, the former houses of the band members and naturally, the rebuilt Cavern Club.
