Nottingham Information

Think of Nottingham and the instant thought is one of Robin Hood and the malevolent Sheriff. Whilst Robin’s battles with Nottingham’s most famous tyrant have spawned tales, ballads, films and fantastic publicity for the East Midlands city, Nottingham itself is rapidly transforming itself thanks to a regeneration programme that would probably astound the two famous protagonists from the Middle Ages.

Today Nottingham Castle is perched over the city watching over the modernisation of Parliament Square as the textile town diversifies into technological based markets. The heart of the city has had two major face-lifts; at Parliament Square in front of the Grade II listed Nottingham Council House and on the banks of the River Trent which spawn commercial offices, law courts and a diverse and active night life scene which features traditional pubs and upmarket restaurants and bars.

Nottingham has some of the best clubbing venues in the UK catering for everyone’s tastes, whether an indie, rock, r&b or dance music lover. The clubbing community comes from locally and afar, including students who study at Nottingham University, one of the elite Russell Group universities. The Nottingham Arena hosts gigs for artists of the calibre of Elton John, whilst families can participate in ice skating at the National Ice Centre opposite the arena. For less sporty families there is the chance to be part of the Robin Hood tours which take place around Sherwood Forest and the city centre of Nottingham.

Whilst Robin Hood has passed into folklore, modern day heroes representing Nottingham come from the sporting scene, with the late 1970s and early 1980s the city’s peak years. Nottingham ice-skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean danced their way to perfect sixes in the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, whilst Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest were one of the powerhouses of European football, winning the European Cup in 1979 and 1980. Forest’s neighbours, Notts County are the oldest league football club in the world and their Meadow Lane home is a goal-kick away from the City Ground. Cricket enthusiasts can visit Nottingham to watch English test matches at Trent Bridge, which is in close proximity to Nottingham Railway station.
